Undoubtedly you’ve seen news of Teddy Bears taking over neighborhood windows worldwide. Starting in Iceland late last month, it’s based on a popular Children’s book We’re Going on a Bear Hunt written by Michael Rosen in 1985. Families all over the world have been posting teddy bears (or geese, lambs, or aliens) in their front windows to bring a little brightness to the lives of neighboring children. The aim is to “collect” as many stuffies as you can, providing a safe activity to the otherwise suddenly-less-eventful-lives of little ones stuck at home with no school, no friends, and even no playgrounds.
In fact, I decided to take my kids on a little scavenger hunt myself in our neighborhood just yesterday. We live in Admiral, an area on the North end of West Seattle, up the hill from Alki Beach. I’ve only included a small fraction of the number of bears my kids and I saw on our walk last night.
Pretty sure a sneaky tooth pillow joined the party:
We loved looking at the creative ways West Seattleites are joining together, like this banner bear:
Better yet, there are even local maps you can follow and add to, like this one in Madison Park. New bears are popping up everyday around me, I bet you’ll find there are tons in your area too! My kids LOVE finding new bears each time we go out.
So, tell us about what bears/alligators/giraffes/dolls you have seen propped in windows in your community. We’d love to see an example. Send us a picture, send us a map, or even better, show us what you have perched in your window. We'd love to see signs of encouragement as well, like this one near Schmitz Park:
We are all in this self quarantine together, and it seems it's working. That doesn’t mean we’ll all be congregating in parks and beaches anytime soon, but we appreciate the ongoing effort of our fellow Washingtonians. #WeGotThisSeattle.
Now, let’s see your stuffies and how you’re bringing the Greater Seattle Community together!
